Is there anything we can do to change the perception of the left so it's no longer defined by its most extreme members?

I hear this over and over again: it doesn't matter that Democratic politicians try to pass legislation to harm white men, it doesn't matter that prominent left wing commentators don't make statements about how much they hate white people and men, "the left hates white men" is widely seen as an obviously true statement because of what people on "the left" say.

What do we do about this? None of the people in leadership as far as I can tell, with some minor exceptions (cough Chevalier) are anywhere close to expressing this sort of thing. Yet because some people on the internet go off the deep end, "the left" broadly is anti-man, anti-white, feminism is about female supremacy and male oppression, etc etc.

What are we, as individuals as a group, supposed to do if we're on the left and we don't believe these things? It doesn't matter one bit what I do when apparently the existence of any person on the left who does believe these things now means "the left" as a whole believes them?
