First time cat owner. both of my indoor Bengals have bloody stools, one is scooting after pooping, but they're acting completely normal.
I'm hoping someone has experienced something similar because I'm really stressed.
I have two strictly indoor male Bengals:
- Beans (almost 1 year old)
- Clover (almost 2 years old)
A while back, before I adopted Beans, Clover started having stools that would look normal at first, but then the end would get softer and have a small amount of blood. I took him to the vet, and they recommended a probiotic, which seemed to help, and the problem eventually improved.
Now Beans has started doing the same thing, and Clover's symptoms seem to have come back, which is why I'm much more concerned this time.
Here's what's been happening:
- The stool starts out completely normal.
- At the very end it becomes softer/runny.
- There's a small amount of blood at the end of the stool or left around the anus after they finish.
- Beans has been scooting his butt on the carpet immediately after pooping.
- I checked his rear and it doesn't look swollen or obviously injured.
- His most recent poop actually looked normal and didn't have obvious blood in it, but he still scooted afterward.
The strange part is that both cats are acting completely normal otherwise:
- Eating normally.
- Drinking water.
- Playing and chasing each other around.
- Not hiding.
- Normal energy.
- Beans has been urinating normally as well.
The only thing that seems wrong is the blood associated with bowel movements and the scooting.
The breeder/person I got them from told me they had always been fed Blue Wilderness Salmon dry kibble. That's what I've continued feeding them, although I recently introduced a small amount of Prowess kibble to see if they liked it because I read that it has really good ingredients. So they are currently on Prowess all-in-one kibble. I have a bag of blue wilderness i can switch them back to if need be.
Another thing I'm struggling with is their diet in general. I constantly read that Bengals should be eating more wet food, but honestly mine don't seem to do well on it. Every time I've tried feeding wet food, it seems like it upsets their stomachs, so they've mostly stayed on dry food. The only wet food I've tried to give a shot was the Kirkland brand Pate. I am more than open to suggestions.
At this point I honestly feel like I'm doing something wrong. I want to feed them the healthiest diet possible, but every time I try changing or improving something, I feel like it ends up upsetting their stomachs.
I'm taking both of them to the vet on Thursday, and I'm planning to mention that both cats have had this issue and ask for fecal testing.
My questions are:
- Has anyone had both cats develop bloody stools around the same time?
- Could this still be something like food sensitivity even though both are affected?
- Could anal glands cause a little blood and scooting after pooping?
- Is any amount of blood after a bowel movement considered abnormal, or have you seen small amounts from simple irritation?
- Has anyone else had Bengals that simply don't tolerate wet food well?
I'm obviously going to the vet, but I'd really appreciate hearing if anyone has experienced something similar while I wait for the appointment. I'm just trying to do right by them and figure out what's going on.
TL;DR: Both of my strictly indoor Bengals are having stools that start normal but end with a small amount of blood. Beans also scoots after pooping. Otherwise they're completely normal (eating, drinking, playing, peeing). Clover had this in the past and improved with probiotics, but now both cats have it. I recently introduced a little Prowess kibble but switched back to their regular Blue Wilderness Salmon. Vet appointment is Thursday—just wondering if anyone has experienced something similar.
