Finally got closure on a maybe situation (you can guess what happened!)

This is a situation with me (32M) and her (27F). She started at my office last year, and while I thought she was cute, I didn't really have any romantic interest in her. While we work in the same office, we do very different things, so I really only ever saw her in the hall or at work events.

This past winter, I needed a second pair of hands for a field job, and the rest of my normal crew was busy, so I asked her. We went, did the job, and talked a lot on the drive to and from. Learned a lot about her and her family. I thought it went well, so a month later, I asked her again to help on a job I'd normally have asked someone else for.

That time, she started dropping hints of interest that were so blatant even my dumb ass caught them, the most obvious one being buying a copy of my book I wrote off Amazon on the spot after she asked me for a synopsis.

I played dumb at the time, but after thinking it over, I decided 'what the hell; we're both adults and I know she's not crazy'. I had to wait because she was out of town for work, then I was, but the first day we were both back in the office, I went in her office and asked her out for lunch (and asked for her number!).

That's when life threw a wrench in. Literally 3 hours after I asked, a family member in town told her they were moving for a new job opportunity. She relied on them for pet sitting for out of town jobs, so this was unpleasant news for her if she was going to stay here. However, we have an office in the new city, and she complains all the time about not having enough work to do, so moving could give her a fresh start. The first date when we got lunch, she told me the truth about what happened, and was very obviously distracted because she hadn't made up her mind yet.

After that, no amount of trying to make plans did anything. She was still friendly in person (we even went on another job), but texts that weren't work related went unanswered for days. So I assumed she wasn't interested due to the very tempting offer to move, and texted her directly asking about it. Two days later, she confirmed she wanted to stay work friends. So now I'm just waiting for her to eventually announce she's leaving.

TL;DR: Asked out a coworker after she dropped hints, but life got in the way and she backed off.
