transitioning from classical to more contemporary/pop (sight reading)

🧑‍🏫Question/Help (Intermed./Advanced)

i’ve been playing classical my whole life, got a bunch of qualifications for it- and i went to uni to study contemporary music (i.e songwriting, production etc.)

i’ve been playing session piano for 5 years- in bands and for artists- and have developed a lot in that area.

so i can both read sheet music in classical, and i can play and learn popular music by ear and chord charts easily- but i am terrible at sight reading more modern stuff on the spot.
like i am terrible at rhythm reading, anything swung or jazz etc. idk why it’s so different to classical to read but it is

i just did an audition for a cruise where you just sight read 4 songs they send you like 30 mins before and it was disastrous- i’m not too upset about it in general but like my performance was shocking, especially bc it’s to a backing track.

like if i’d had a day to learn the songs it would’ve been fine, but they want someone who can sight read funky stuff fluently on the spot which i cannot do, despite sight reading for fun all the time

how can i become better at this- ik just doing it a lot and practicing is the best way but like i kinda already do that, maybe just not in the right style.
