Thoughts on the R2 after my test drive

💬 Discussion

I test drove an R2 the other day and currently waiting for my invite (Nov-Dec). My objective thoughts on the test drive are that overall it's a great car and I can't wait to purchase one. I currently drive a 2019 Volvo XC90 Inscription that's fully loaded. There are definitely some things that I will miss, but I'm ready to jump into an EV and after the litany of maintenance issues I've had the last two years, I'm not interested in the Volvo brand any longer (although for what it's worth, I absolutely loved my XC90 for the first several years).

R2's Pros:

  • 0-60 acceleration absolutely blew me away
  • The materials in the front compartment seem luxurious
  • The touch screen interface was very responsive (no lag)
  • Cameras are great quality
  • Seats were more comfortable than I was expecting - read some mixed reviews
  • Drop down glass is really cool
  • Much roomier in all aspects than I was expecting
  • Love the ability to choose accent colors (I was expecting them to cost cut with no accent color)

R2's Cons:

  • Rear compartment materials is where cost-cutting seemed obvious

  • The sound system leaves a lot to be desired (I've been spoiled with a Bowers & Wilkins top-end system in my Volvo)

  • The turn signal sound is awful (I'm hoping there's an option to change this with a software update)

  • The scroll-wheels on the steering wheel has a steep learning curve

  • No grip handle on passenger seat (I'm the person who always holds onto these)

I'm split between the 21" and 20" tires. I think I'll likely go with 20" in order to have a smoother ride. The R2 rep said that when it comes time to change them out, go with all-season and I'll get the 330 mileage out of them.
