“Now available to own” as a slogan in old dvd ads

Nostalgia

I’ve been watching some old movies, as a neighbor left hundreds by a dumpster.

Something that was interesting to me was the language about content.

Given today’s modern world where everything is a subscription where you own nothing, seeing these old movies and the ads say, “BRING HOME THE MAGIC, YOU CAN OWN XYZ FANTASY TODAY!“

It’s just interesting in 20 years how we switched from advertising that people own things that we have produced and put a lot of of time and effort and into. (don’t even get me started on how nice old DVD menus are compared to boring netflix style interfaces)

To now they want to pump out content that no one has time to form an emotional bond with, before there’s more and there’s random people who have no personality for you to like to want to watch the content about, and it’s all on the same app that you have to overpay for. there’s nothing catchy or interesting or anywhere unique to show off the content so it’s just a luck of the draw to find something good that you like.

but now, thanks to my neighbor I own (& am ripping to my home server which I highly recommend in this year of 2026. Stop giving your data to companies and build your own network :D)

a bunch of new dvds and shows and content that I never need to access a big tech companies computer system to watch.

#contentownership

XD (this is an old internet emoji for lurkers)
