I wasn’t scared to make a move, I genuinely didn’t realize how much I liked her until date 5

I’ve been seeing this girl for about a month now. We’ve gone out six times so far, and I feel like I only fully realized how much I actually like her after the fifth date. I know how that sounds, especially because I’ve read a bunch of posts about people going on five or six dates without kissing and most of the replies are basically “what the hell are you waiting for?” lol. But I genuinely don’t think I was waiting for anything. We were basically strangers when we first met. I thought she was attractive, I really liked her style and thought she was interesting, but I didn’t know her. After our first date I remember thinking she was cool and that I’d definitely like to see her again. That was pretty much where my head was at.

Then we just kept seeing each other and I started getting to know her more every time. We’d walk around for hours, talk about work, our lives, random things we liked, things we wanted to do, and whatever was happening around us. We got comfortable pretty quickly. At some point we started exchanging small thoughtful gifts, she started sending me selfies sometimes, we’d check in on each other and tell each other completely random shit about our days. I obviously liked all of this and I always looked forward to seeing her, but somehow I still wasn’t consciously thinking “I really like this girl romantically” or constantly wondering when I should kiss her. I was mostly just enjoying spending time with her and learning more about her.

Maybe this is important context, but I’m naturally pretty laid-back when it comes to this kind of stuff. I’m not someone who likes acting more interested or intense than I actually feel just because there’s some dating timeline I’m supposed to follow. I tend to mean what I say and I like my actions to match what I’m actually feeling. So I wasn’t secretly dying to kiss her for five dates and chickening out every time. I genuinely wasn’t sure what I wanted yet. Attraction alone isn’t usually enough for me to immediately know I want something romantic with someone. She was a stranger and I needed to actually know her. I needed to listen to her, see how she thinks, what she cares about and, I guess, figure out how I felt when I was around her.

Then we had our fifth date and the stupid thing is that nothing particularly dramatic happened. We didn’t kiss and there wasn’t some huge romantic movie moment. I just left, started heading home and somewhere on the way back I realized, very clearly, “oh fuck, I really like her.” There wasn’t much debate in my head at that point. I just knew. And ironically, that’s when I started getting nervous about everything. Before that I felt completely natural around her because I wasn’t thinking about the outcome. Now suddenly I’m thinking about kissing her, wondering if I’ve been too slow, wondering if she might see me as a friend and noticing tiny interactions in a completely different way. It’s almost like becoming consciously aware that I cared about what happened between us made me worse at simply being present with her.

We’ve seen each other again since then and we still keep making plans. We’ve talked about going running together, playing football with a bet that the loser buys coffee, and going to a Japanese restaurant where we jokingly agreed to do a Japanese/Japandi-inspired dress code because we both loved the concept. Some people I’ve talked to about her think she might be pretty into me too based on the way we interact and how consistently we keep choosing to spend time together, but I honestly don’t know and I don’t want to speak for her. I also don’t want to turn every selfie, text or gift into evidence that she likes me. I’m mostly confused and fascinated by my own brain here.

I think that’s why the whole “six dates and no kiss” thing feels weird to me. A lot of the stories I’ve read are from people who knew on the first or second date that they desperately wanted to kiss the other person but were too afraid to do it. That genuinely wasn’t my experience. I met a stranger, thought she was cool and attractive, kept learning more about her and kept wanting to see her again. Apparently somewhere during that process my feelings changed before I consciously noticed they had changed, and it took me until I was on my way home after our fifth date for my brain to finally go, “hey idiot, you really fucking like this girl.”

Has anyone else experienced a slow burn like this, where you didn’t even realize it was happening until you were already emotionally in it? And did realizing you genuinely liked the person actually make you more nervous and less natural around them?

English isn’t my first language, so yeah, I used AI to help translate what I originally wrote. The story is mine lol.
