For anyone who has used both unreal and unity, what are the benefits for an RPG?
I am currently using unity for a different small indie game, it's just a pixel art game. For my other game that I'm making, a massive open world RPG, I decided to go with unreal engine. But I've honestly regretted it. Unreal engine is very powerful, extraordinarily capable, decently well architected. But I feel that I'm too new and two novice, too few for unreal engine. That is the biggest problem that I have faced with unreal engine so far. For example, I created an entire continent and tried to bring it into unreal engine yesterday, and it was an extraordinarily difficult process. 12 hours spent, trying to fight the world partition and figure out how to slice it and what component sizes to use and sections per component. The thing has been horrible. It was extremely difficult to figure out
If I'm being realistic I don't think I'll finish a game in unreal engine. I think if I had two decades to work on it, maybe I could. But I think unreal engine is suited to at least a team of about five people, bare minimum, for the game type that I'm trying to create. It just seems too extraordinarily difficult so I'm considering just swapping this project over to unity and starting fresh from there
The biggest problem of course going to unity is going to be the open world RPG aspect. I could do it elder scrolls online style, where you go up to a gate or some sort of passageway point and then you trigger a small load screen or fade to black and then you're in a new zone or area. I think it would be extraordinarily difficult to have a pure seamless open world, where are you just running around and you go from one region to another end it suddenly loads the entire zone in front of you. That sounds enormously challenging.
Any thoughts or advice? Words of wisdom? Encouragement? Insults?
