Built an open-source governance & observability layer for AI capabilities in Spring Boot — looking for feedback
Hi everyone,
I've been working on an open-source project called Capstead, a governance and observability control plane for AI capabilities in Spring Boot.
As teams add more AI features, I found it difficult to answer questions like:
- Which AI capabilities does our application expose?
- Who owns each capability?
- How much does each capability cost?
- Which capabilities are failing or exceeding latency budgets?
Spring AI already provides excellent model-level integrations and metrics. Capstead is designed to sit above that layer by treating AI features as business capabilities.
With a simple u/Capability annotation (or a bodyless u/CapabilityClient interface), it provides:
- Live capability catalog
- Per-capability cost attribution, latency, success rate, and token usage
- Daily budget enforcement
- Durable execution history with parent/child execution trees
- MCP export so capabilities can be exposed as agent tools
- Provider-neutral support (Spring AI, LangChain4j, custom SDKs, or any HTTP client)
The goal is to provide a governance layer on top of existing AI integrations.
I'd really appreciate feedback from the Spring community:
- Does this solve a problem you've encountered?
- Are there capabilities or integrations you'd expect to see?
- Is there a better approach to capability discovery or governance in Spring applications?
