Retraining into engineering – does this seem like a sensible plan?
Hi everyone,
I'm considering retraining into engineering after working in manufacturing for the last few years on minimum wage. My current role mainly involves assembly and a little soldering. I've asked about progression into machining/CNC, but there haven't been any opportunities.
I have GCSE Maths and English (both Grade 5), an A* in ICT and a full driving licence. I also have some savings and the ability to support myself while retraining.
My current plan is:
Complete a Level 2 Engineering Technologies diploma (if required).
Progress onto the Level 3 Engineering Technologies diploma.
Apply for engineering technician, manufacturing technician or junior engineering roles.
Hopefully have an employer sponsor me through an HNC while working.
I'm aware this may mean taking a temporary step backwards financially, but my thinking is that I'd rather invest 1–2 years now if it gives me much better long-term career prospects than staying in a minimum wage role with limited progression.
For those already working in engineering:
Does this seem like a realistic route into the industry?
Would you recommend trying to go straight into Level 3 if I'm eligible, or is completing Level 2 first worthwhile?
Is it realistic to move into an engineering technician role after Level 3 without doing another apprenticeship?
If you were in my position, would you take this route, or would you do something differently?
I'd really appreciate any honest advice from people already working in engineering.
