My dad (50M) and I (25M) haven't had a real conversation in 20 years and now he wants to all of a sudden?
My mom died by suicide when I was 5. My relationship with my dad broke that day. He withdrew from most relationships and people, including me, and I struggled without my mom. After a few months he threw himself into dating women and I met several before he met his second wife Kristy. My dad married Kirsty and then disappeared again. When I say he disappeared I mean he was physically present but emotionally gone. He didn't have an actual conversation and very few words were exchanged. Kirsty tried to get through to him and failed. So instead she tried to be a mother to me and she felt she owed it to me to stay. I couldn't ever see someone else as a mother and she accepted it when I was 16 after we talked and I told her to go find a family where she would be happy. So Kirsty divorced my dad and then I left a few months later when I was 17.
My dad and I were basically no contact until last year when he reached out and reached out occasionally. He didn't really say anything. It was very basic hi how's things and done. Then a week ago he told me we really should sit down and talk. He said he had some things to say and ask and to please consider it. I've been doing nothing but that since. My gut says no because all these years later it feels too late. But then I think mom would have wanted us to talk and work things out if possible. I just don't know.
Advice?
In case anyone wonders about therapy. I went for four years but no longer attend therapy or have a therapist and I'd like to keep things that way for now.
