Trust: Bounty Hunter - Chapter 1 (1300 words)
I’m looking for honest reader impressions. I’m particularly interested in:
Where you were confused.
Where you wanted to keep reading.
Any sections that dragged.
What promises you think the story is making.
Thank you for your time.
A man stands in an alley, he stares across the street through the slit that is his lifted collar and his low seated cowboy hat, he looks up the street and down the other way. He sees no one and nothing on the poorly lit cracked street. He loosens his fingers they dangle out his thick sleeves. He steps out of the shadows and he hears a light, tap tap, tap tap. Down the street. He steps back into the shadows. A young couple walks past him. He notices their interlocked fingers. He looks down at his fingers dangling out of his thick sleeves. He looks back to them, watching them as they go down the street. He waits until he can’t hear the tapping of their footsteps, then crosses the littered street.
He enters an adjacent alley, his loose fingers dangle tense out of his thick sleeves. He comes to a drain pipe and taps a rhythm. A man shuffles out from behind a dumpster, a bottle hanging loose in his hand. The heavily covered man narrows his eyes at the drunk. The drunk says to the alley, “ssay, when-sh the ssun coming up?”
The man pulls the zipper of his collar down exposing his mouth, a little mist of breath leaves his mouth and he replies “when the the moon is finished his job.” He zips his collar back up.
The drunk turns to the man, wipes his mouth and straightens, “looks like you made it over the border easily enough.” He straightens out his clothes. The heavily clothed man stands silent. The other man says “If you’ll come this way I’ll take you to it.” He gestures with his hand. The man follows.
They walk through multiple sections, each section of the city more impoverished than the last. They walk past a family living underneath tarps. The man in the heavy coat stops and looks at them. The father is breaking a little piece of bread in half and giving it to his two kids. The eldest of the two takes his piece and splits the already small piece in half and gives the half to his father. The father, with a saddened smile, says “thank you Jim, but I already ate today.” And gives the piece back to the boy. The man says, “hey man, we don’t have a lot of time to get to the warehouse. The man in the heavy coat unzips his mouth, reaches into his pocket takes out a pepper and throws it into his mouth. He snarls as he bites. They begin walking again, the man’s eyes linger on the father. They finally arrive at a warehouse. The other man asks, “aren’t you hot with all those layers?”
The man pauses then simply says, “… I have poor circulation.” The other man says, “suit yourself. I’m melting,” and loosens his own collar. They get to the door and the other man says, “here’s the treasure of a lifetime.” He reaches for the door.
The hands from the man shoot out of his thick sleeves grabbing the other man’s face. The other man stops moving, crackling starts emitting from within him. His skin grows frost and veins push up against his skin. The man lets go, the other man falls and breaks apart like a snowman slammed on the ground. The man unzips his coat as steam lightly trails off his body. The man stares down at slush body, with eyes that are supposed to be much harder than they are. He shakes his head and hardens his eyes.
The man goes through the door, there are stacks of crates of food and medical supplies and other necessities. A voice from within the warehouse calls, “Hey who ar-“ the door closes and voices start screaming from the inside of the warehouse.
The man leaves the warehouse, his jacket is off, shirt is loose and his cowboy hat is off. Steam trails behind him as he walks. Bloody slush runs out the warehouse door.He makes his way through the impoverished city.
Hours later, the man is bundled up again as he stands outside of a business. The sign says, “Hot Spring Spa.” He stares up at the sign with narrowed eyes. He closes his eyes and sighs, then walks into the building. The door dings and the receptionist says, “Welcome to Hot—” The man looks at her through his slit. She gulps and says, “Private hot spring 3.” He nods and walks into the spa.
He walks past bathers until he gets to doors that say “Private.” Two large men stand on either side. The man raises his arms, one of the large men pats him down. The large man stands back, his fists are trembling, teeth chattering and he tucks his hands into his armpits. The man breathes out steam from underneath his collar. The other large man says, “He’s been waiting for you.”
The man lowers his arms and walks in. He opens up “Private hot spring 3.”
A heavy set man sits in the spring, his bulk hides his thick muscles. There are four men with him and by each of them sits an oddly shaped gun. The man raises an arm from the pool and says with a believably contented, “Ah, Sonny welcome, care to join us?” Sonny glances at the guns. “No thank you. You like the water a little too hot for me sir.” Sonny looks at the heavy man.
The man laughs and says, “Well suit yourself Sonny boy!” The men start laughing with him. Sonny narrows his eyes and says, “District 14, section 34, warehouse 538.” The heavy set man and his men’s laughter fade down. The heavy man looks serious and says, “and the good samaritans?” Sonny pauses, rolls his eyes and says, “…I put them on ice.” The heavy man and his men start hardily laughing, he says, “That’s why I like you Sonny, you know how to make me laugh.” Sonny stands still with half lidded eyes and sighs out steam. The heavy man catches his breath with a hand on his belly, “Oh boy. Your money will be wired to you in the next hour.”
Sonny nods and begins to turn around, the heavy man says, “The Trust appreciates your discretion.” Over his shoulder Sonny nods again. He goes to reach for the door and the man says, “Oh Sonny before you go, can you cool the water down for us a bit?” Sonny’s outstretched hand turns into a fist and slides back up his heavy sleeve. Sonny closes his eyes tight. His eyes open to the sound of tapping. Sonny lets out a slow exhale of steam that billows out from the collar. Sonny turns around. He sees a man tapping his gun on the wall of the pool. “Tools do as they’re told.” The gunman says. The heavy man is smiling.
Sonny walks to the edge of the pool. He bends his knees. Pulls his hand out of his heavy sleeve. Looks at his hand. Puts a finger into the water, he grunts with a puff of steam. The man says, “a little more.” Sonny reaches with his other hand and throws his hat off, steam trails from the top of his head and his mouth.
The heavy man says, “just a little bit more.” Sonny clenches his face. “Stop!” The heavy man commands. Sonny falls backwards panting steam out. The heavy man smiles, “That’s perfect.” Sonny is peeling off his coat steam billowing out from underneath. “Expect a little bonus in that wire.”
Sonny grabs his hat and runs to the door. He fumbles with the knob. The men start laughing. He grips the knob and rips the door open. He runs out of the private section, heavy steam trailing behind him. He runs past the receptionist, she looks somber. He gets outside and lets out a huge exhale. Steam licks off his body as he stands there hunched in the street. His hands clenched tightly on his knees, “Tool!?” He says to himself.
