The attributes of adulthood in TSITP
The show tried really hard to portray Belly and Jeremiah as immature children who decided to get married on a whim and Conrad as the only mature person in the room. But what do the actual facts tell us?
Belly and Jeremiah worked really hard to save up money for their wedding when literally no one supported them. Of course, they had to make Jeremiah have a bad credit score as an obstacle (the boy who handled medical bills for the whole summer suddenly doesn’t know shit about finances, sure), and yet they still managed to get an apartment they wanted with no one’s help. Now, what is brought up the most when talking about supposed immaturity? Oh yeah, them actually having fun together (like them teasing each other in the pool) or them being angry at Conrad for not accepting their life decision, or them staying at Adam’s WHILE LOOKING FOR THEIR OWN PLACE.
Meanwhile, all Conrad has to do is to embrace the idea of an adult: solving crosswords in a newspaper/crossword book (like an average young person in his early twenties, I guess), repairing the roof (suddenly he’s a handyman, okay, let’s assume he watched tutorials on YouTube), making food for Belly or driving her to pick up wedding decorations. But if you look closely, his actions are as immature as people claim Belly and Jere’s actions are, if not more. He passes on the summer job opportunity to stay with his brother’s fiancée after HE HIMSELF REJECTED HER while Jeremiah encouraged him to be with her if she wants. He refuses to take advice from the doctor and decides to overwork himself just to potentially endanger a patient. He flies to see Belly in Paris instead of preparing for the conference which, by the way, should’ve been Agnes’s opportunity given how she takes her responsibilities way more seriously. Not to mention how his nice apartment is still paid by Adam, and his therapy sessions are only given to again, show the idea of maturity, yet Conrad can’t even say Belly’s name to his therapist.
As someone in her early twenties, I find the portrayal of “coming out of age” in season 3 quite hilarious, because out of all people there, only Jeremiah had a more or less believable arc like that, and Belly… well, her Paris version is gonna be greatly missed.
