Dunu Titan X Review - Lots of Tips!

Review

Introduction

Dunu doesn’t really need any introduction. They are one of the oldest brands in the industry and have been making IEMs probably longer than the hobby took its shape. On the other hand Titan X might be their cheapest IEMs so far, at least the cheapest that I know of. Coming at 35 USD for the analog cabled version, I will try to answer how much of a trade off we should expect from Dunu.

Disclaimers

Dunu Titan X has been sent to me by a Hifigo as a gift and they said a Review isn’t mandatory but I took it upon myself to review the unit I was sent. As I always say, everyone is biased one way or another, so take everything you read with a grain of salt. Additionally, I will try to be more concise and to the point in my reviews from now on, without worrying about word count or flowery language. If you have any questions, please ask me in the comments, and I will try to answer them to the best of my abilities.

Packaging, Build and Accessories of Dunu Titan X

If there is one thing I like about Dunu, it’s their generosity with accessories. I might not have reviewed any of their products before but I have owned or tried several Dunus. In this sense, Titan X is no exception. Of course there have been some corner cutting due to the price, but Dunu still provided one of the most generous packages despite all that. The only IEM that had provided more stuff was TRN Conch as far as I remember.

Inside the box, you get the IEMs, 3 sets of eartips, including Dunu’s own S&S and Candy tips, a cleaning tool, the cable and a soft carrying pouch. The carrying pouch is a nice touch and something I expect even from budget sets. The cleaning tool is on the other hand, is the usual you get with Dunu IEMs but at this price, it’s unheard of. The cable looks great with a metal 3.5 mm termination and Y-split. The connectors on the IEM’s side are plastic. The chin cinch is rubberized and works pretty well. Cable itself is a little stiff and memory prone but still thin enough so it isn’t too windy or tangly. The cable comes with a velcro so it won’t get tangled when stored. As a side note, if you are one of those that complain about velcro damaging your clothes, just use them reversed so their soft side stays on the outside.

The earpieces are made out of solid metal and they are pretty hefty too. Really though, making metal IEMs at this price is one thing but making them this heavy makes me wonder how Dunu and Hifigo are making money from these. At 13 grams they are even heavier than my 12 gram Blon x HBB Z300s. And still they are pretty comfortable in my ears but I bet they would be more comfortable if they were lighter.

Sound of Dunu Titan X

Tonality

In Titan X, Dunu went with an easily likeable tonality. It’s warm and easy to listen to. Bass is big, maybe slightly below basshead levels but satisfying. Still I like my bass tight and controlled. In Titan X, the bass feels a little pillowy.

This big bass bleeds into the mids, which was more of a case with old IEMs but not nowadays. It’s not a bad thing, just a tuning decision. I wouldn’t call these muddy, they are just warmer than neutral. Male vocals sound great but female vocals lose their natural brilliance. If your library consists of a lot of female vocalists, you can’t help but notice the trade off.
.
Treble isn’t Titan X’s strong suit either. It’s alright, not offensive or peaky. But sometimes it feels blunted. If you are like me, you can find yourself missing some sparkle up top. Treble extension isn’t great either.

Technicalities

Titan X is pretty average for its technical capability. The detail level is okay and the stage size isn’t particularly big either. Imaging can get slightly fuzzy which is expected at this price range. Like I said above, the strongest suit of Titan X is being easy on the ears. Timbre is pretty palatable as well.

Comparisons

Dunu Titan X vs. Kefine Klean SV

  • Klean SV’s bass is tighter. Compared to that, Titan X’s bass is more pillowy. Klean SV also has slightly better bass extension, at least it’s more subbass focussed so rumbling is more noticeable.
  • Titan X has warmer lower mids. Klean SV’s mids are clear and retain their natural timbre.
  • While vocals sound girthy, female vocals lose their natural brilliance which isn’t the case with Klean SV.
  • Klean SV is overall much brighter in the treble. Titan X sounds relatively blunted compared to Klean SV. Treble extension is also much better on Klean SV, maybe overly so.
  • Technically Klean SV is pretty much superior to Titan X in every way. Klean SV is more detailed, also its soundstage extends wider. Titan X is easier on the ears for longer listening sessions but Klean SV is both more lively and more high fidelity.

Dunu Titan X vs. Cozoy D1

  • Titan X has a bigger and rumblier bass. Bass guitars are also more pronounced on Titan X. D1’s bass is tighter and more controlled. Titan X’s bass comes as a little pillowy compared to D1’s.
  • Mids on D1 sound quite clean and natural. Titan X has an overall warmer tonality. D1 sounds cleaner compared to that. Both have forward mids but Titan X feels more intimate.
  • D1's overall sound is overall brighter sounding. Titan X’s treble is just right and inoffensive. D1 can be sibilant and peaky occasionally. Neither has a very good treble extension.
  • They both have similar detail levels. However D1 is more spacious and better at imaging. Titan X is quite intimate sounding without being closed in. Lastly Titan X’s timbre sounds more palatable.

Conclusion

Dunu Titan X isn’t the market disrupter as some might have expected it to be. But it definitely is one of the most compelling choices in its price range. Dunu didn’t disappoint when it comes to accessories like always and sound quality is pretty much on par with the competition. If you like warmer tunings, I’d say Titan X is one of the best choices under 50 USD when all things are considered.
