WTF is the point of the "Irising Shield"?

I like the design and flavor of it but when you compare it to the phase shield which has all the same traits with more ac, hardness, and hp plus it's 0 bulk to boot. Literally the only mechanical advantage I see to the irising is that it's 10 credits cheaper which I doubt would ever be relevant. Very disappointing.
