Testing a possible 'Dolby Atmos fix' for SteamOS on ROG Xbox Ally X

🎮 ROG Xbox Ally Discussion

I’ve been digging into the audio performance of the ROG XOX Ally X on SteamOS. I think I might have stumbled on a way to extract the actual, Dolby Atmos DAX3 tuning XMLs from the Windows audio drivers and convert them into pipewire filters that can be used on SteamOS.

Basically, instead of guessing EQ curves or relying on heavy DSP apps that might crash or eat up CPU, this allows you to apply the exact speaker correction, EQ, and dynamics processing that ASUS ships with the device on Windows.

I found it on this repo on GitHub: https://github.com/antoinecellerier/speaker-tuning-to-easyeffects

I haven’t had the chance to fully test this implementation yet, because I am not running SteamOS now. Will do so when I have the time. However, I managed to generate the pipewire .conf files using the DEV\_0294\_SUBSYS\_10431384\_PCI\_SUBSYS\_13841043.xml (I hope this is the correct one) of the Windows driver, that can be used on SteamOS to try it out.

Has anyone here experimented with this yet, or is willing to test my generated pipewire configuration on SteamOS and report back on how it sounds?

To install it:

  1. Make sure you have pipewire installed in ~./config/pipewire (I don't know if it comes standard with SteamOS, see: https://grokipedia.com/page/SteamOS\_audio\_alternatives#installing-and-setting-up-pipewire)

  2. Download the files here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1nu6eiXHWZXeeOKjnxy_KDWU6vBA39_p-?usp=drive_link

  3. Paste them in: ~/.config/pipewire/pipewire.conf.d/. If the folder doesn't exist yet, you can create it.

  4. run systemctl --user restart pipewire pipewire-pulse from Konsole

  5. This should create virtual devices 'Dolby_Warm', 'Dolby_Detailed' and 'Dolby_Balanced' that you can select in the sound settings of SteamOS.
