Daily Read — 2026-07-15: The fear premium went to oil, not gold. And the biggest volume spike we have ever logged (975x) was a secret, not a signal.

Daily Read

Day one of the blockade: a seven-hour strike operation, Hormuz traffic down to a handful of vessels, retaliation on three US bases. Gold's reaction: flat, drifting near $4,060. Brent's reaction: through $85, up ~9% in three sessions. The fear bid is real - it just went to the barrel, because the barrel is the thing actually being blockaded. Gold spent a third straight day trading on rate math instead (June PPI came in cool this morning - the second rear-view inflation print celebrated in two days). Name the mechanism once and none of this is surprising.

Scanner day: 82 volume anomalies in Canada, 35 up / 28 down. The number of the day - Matachewan Consolidated (MCM.A) traded 975 TIMES its median volume. Largest spike we have logged since launch. The news behind it? A board shuffle nine days ago on a ~$5M dormant shell. That is the classic activation pattern: fresh directors land on a sleepy shell, volume arrives before any disclosable deal. Here is the distinction that keeps us out of trouble: a volume spike is a SIGNAL when it comes with information you can verify. It is a SECRET when it comes with none. We trade signals. Secrets trade us. Pass, logged, revisit the day a deal is announced.

Worse story, same ledger: Adex Mining (ADE.V) spiked 138x and rose 20% - two days after New Brunswick CANCELLED the claim its entire flagship project sits on, for insufficient work expenditures. The tape is betting on the word "transaction" in a regulator's letter. A cancelled claim fails the most basic filter there is. Pass.

And the honest cost column, because that is the deal: StrikePoint (SKP.V) ran another 20% - day three, no new news - and sits ~24% above where we passed. Minco Silver (MSV.TO), our permanent jurisdiction pass, is up ~60% since we passed. Both currently "wrong" on price. Both still right on process. Neither reason has changed. We publish what our rules cost in the same font as what they win - that is what makes the wins mean something.
