Protect usage odds

I just encountered a player whose Mega Swampert just used Protect 4 times in a row and I'm stunned. I won the match but it's such a rare thing to see. Hitting back to back protects is hard enough, but 4 in a row?? That was extremely lucky. I was trying to lock them onto using Protect with Encore but it looks like their luck did it for me.
