AIO for not supporting a mutual friend because he might go jail

For the sake of making everything easy I'll refer to the two individuals as S and U. I've known both S and U for around the same length of time and that's four years.

Last year me and U we're going for a drive to pick up another mutual friend for diner, we eventually arrived with U going into our friends house to get him. They both took awhile to get back, so in my boredom I looked for the aux to play some music and eventually glanced at a court bundle. I'm not the nosey type, so I didn't pry or look into it, but it had his name on it, to which I made a mental note of it. I waited until U came back without the other friend he wasn't coming with us, understanding this, I brought up the matter of the court order. He explained it as domestics between his ex wife and I left it as such and didn't pry further.

So today S called me and told me U got arrested, there's a video circulating of his arrest making the rounds on the internet, so much so that his auntie found out and wanted to make confirmation. The situation looks bad. He asked me if I wanted to go see him or offer him so legal advice/support (I work in criminal law, so that's why he asked) I told him no and I don't want any involvement due to the nature of the crime. That resulted with me being berated and told I'm a bad friend for not showing an support.

I told him that as someone that's been a victim of the crime he's accused of and has family members that have gone through similar at the hands of their partner, I don't feel comfortable being around him. Again that got me labeled as a fake friend and that's how things have ended so far.
