Assuming >!Carl!<dies...

Sorry if this theory has been posted already.

Are there any theories about the ending? >!I've been racking my brain and I can't think of another book where the story is written from the main character's perspective and they also die.>! Especially since this story seems to be told by Carl as if he's CURRENTLY telling the story.

Maybe I missed it, but it doesn't seem like he's writing EVERYTHING in the cookbook. It's like he's relating the story to someone listening.
