AIO? Hinge date

🎲 miscellaneous

So I want to include enough context because people usually ask follow-up questions. I’m not looking for validation or for anyone to psychoanalyze either of us, I just want to know how other people would interpret this situation.

I matched with a guy on Hinge, and we both work in the service industry. We had only been talking for a day or so when I asked if he wanted to grab a drink after work that night. I don’t like talking over the app. I’d much rather meet in person as quickly as possible and see what our energy is like together.

The important part is that this wasn’t a set date. It was basically, “If we both get out around the same time, let’s grab a drink.” We never picked a time or place.

I have my Hinge notifications turned off, and after work I completely forgot to check the app. I went home, fell asleep, and remembered the next morning. I apologized, explained what happened, and gave him my phone number because I knew I’d actually see text messages then.

He texted me later in the day while I was already at work. I saw his message around 9 p.m., responded, and then immediately got slammed with a rush. I didn’t get another chance to check my phone until around midnight when I got off.

He already knew I was working that night, and since he’s also been in the service industry for about 15 years, he knows shifts don’t always end when you expect them to. Sometimes you get stuck taking more tables, which is exactly what happened.

When I finally checked my phone, he’d said he had just gotten off work too and was at a nearby bar. I apologized for the delay, explained that we got busy, and told him I’d come meet him for one drink. It was 1am and places here close at 2am anyways.

On my way there, I texted him that I’d be there in about 10 minutes. I actually got there in about 8 and stayed in my car for a couple of minutes finishing a phone call with my sister.

While I was on the phone, I noticed a guy walking around the parking lot looking around. Once I got inside, I realized it was him.

Before I went inside, I opened Hinge to refresh myself on his profile so I’d have something to ask him besides the usual small talk. That’s when I realized he had already unmatched me.

I thought that was a little premature since only about three hours had passed since my last text, and he knew I was at work. But I figured maybe he just cleaned up his matches or assumed I wasn’t coming, so I still went in.

Then my ADHD kicked in. I opened our text to tell him I had arrived but got distracted and forgot to hit send. I went inside, ordered a drink, and while I was waiting I saw he’d texted asking if I had walked in. Apparently he’d seen me come inside but didn’t approach me until after I’d already ordered.

When we started talking, one of the first things he said was that he was glad I wasn’t a catfish and he thought I was going to stand him up.

None of these things by themselves seem like a huge deal. It was more the combination of:

-unmatching me after only a few hours while knowing I was at work,
-telling me he thought I was going to stand him up,
-and realizing he’d been looking for me in the parking lot before I even got inside.

On top of all that conversation was a little awkward. That combination kind of changed the vibe for me, and by the end of the night I wasn’t sure if interested in seeing him again.

Would that combination of things throw you off too, or am I reading too much into it?
