The Arahant and Desire

Opinion

The Buddha makes it clear in the suttas that it is tanha, thirst for sensual pleasures is the cause of all suffering.

Yet how many types of desires can there be? When people translate dukkha as "unsatisfactoriness"', it's a rather unpalatable term.

I would say that no matter how much delicious food you eat, no matter how many intoxicants you might ingest, no matter how much sex you have'; you will always want more.

What others are there? There are pleasant sights and sounds, and odors, but I don't know whether you would consider these as attachments. What would you think?

I read on accesstoinsight.net that "not even delicious food can 'bring them back'". Bring them back from what? Enjoying sensual pleasures. It also says that an out and out Arahant is incapable of the sexual act.

Is an Arahant merely one who has overcome thirst for food and sex? The only intoxicant used in the Buddha's time was some kind of fermented coconut drink.

Or, does the destruction of the taints involve more than just overcoming lust for food and sex (like uprooting ill will and anger for example).

Im no Buddhist scholar (although I did take one semester at Naropa U)

What do you guys think? I'd really l ike some answers, I've been thinking about these issues for a while now.
