Said No to sister once , and mom is happy about it
I’m an older sister, and I’ve always tried to be someone my younger sister could rely on.
Over the years, I’ve spent roughly $3,000 helping with her education, including paying for her graduation expenses. I never expected anything in return. I did it because I loved her and genuinely wanted to support her.
It wasn’t just money.
I drove her to and from school in my own car, covered all the transportation costs myself, and whenever she had problems at school, I spoke to her teachers and tried to help resolve things for her. I always wanted to make life easier for her.
I honestly thought we were close.
About a month ago, she asked me for a small amount of money.
My mother told me not to give it to her, so I simply told my sister, “I’m sorry, Mom said no.”
That was all I said.
I didn’t argue with her.
I didn’t insult her.
I didn’t raise my voice.
Her response completely blindsided me.
She called me awful names, cursed at me, and accused me of treating my brother better than her. It felt like everything I had ever done for her suddenly meant absolutely nothing because of one moment where I said no.
That was the last real conversation we had.
A few weeks later, she got accepted into university.
I expected she’d tell me what she chose to study. Not because I wanted to control her life, but because I’m her sister. This is a huge milestone, and I assumed she’d naturally share it with me.
She never did.
What hurt even more was that my mother knew everything and deliberately kept it from me too.
Whenever I asked, I got vague answers or was told nothing had happened yet.
Eventually, I found out through another family member.
I wasn’t just hurt that I didn’t know.
I was hurt because it felt intentional.
Then I found out she had chosen a university far away and would be moving out to live on her own.
Even my father had hoped she would choose something closer to home, but she made her own decision.
That’s completely her right.
What breaks my heart isn’t where she’s going.
It’s that everyone seemed to know except me.
The hardest part is realizing that my mother wasn’t just silent—she actively participated in keeping this from me. It honestly felt like she was happy that I was being left out.
