Local auto shop messed up my car and cost nearly $6000 to fix their mistakes, wondering if I can sue.
Location: Florida
I went to a local auto shop back in May to get my brake rotors fixed. At the time, my car was squeaking whenever I braked, and it was swerving at higher speeds. When the shop did a diagnostic on my car, they told me there were several things wrong with it. They told me I needed my brake rotors removed and replaced, but they also told me I needed to remove and replace my entire suspension. Beyond this, I was informed that I needed to replace two of my tires, my brake fluids needed to be flushed, as well as my coolant. I agreed to let them work on my car and signed a document authorizing them to do so.
After I got my car back, I noticed that it was driving even worse than before. Whenever I would hit the gas after braking, my car would jolt forward. Additionally, my car continued making the squeaking noise whenever I braked, but sometimes it would make a creaking or groaning noise instead. The swerving remained present when driving at higher speeds. Shortly after receiving my car from the local auto shop, I decided to book an appointment with a Honda dealership to assess what may be wrong with my car. Upon making the assessment, the Honda mechanics claimed that the local auto shop I had gone to used aftermarket parts on my car which did not fit properly. They claimed that the driver control arm did not fit well. Apparently, it was rubbing against the subframe and was overtightened, breaking the hole the bolt goes through on the subframe. I ended up needing to replace the cracked subframe on my car, a bent axle on the driver’s side (the first auto shop did not tell me I had a bent axle), both lower control arms, my front brake pads, and my suspension. I also had my brake rotors fixed, as well as an alignment and a valve adjustment, the latter being because the engine was misfiring after I got my car back from the auto shop. Before leaving the dealership, one of the mechanics who worked on my car gave me the bent axle they had replaced as well as the cracked subframe. I do not know if having the broken car parts will help in a lawsuit, but I figure I should mention it anyway.
Ultimately, I was wondering if there are any legal avenues I can go through to sue. I know I signed a document authorizing the local auto shop to work on my car, but I do not recall them making me sign anything else. If I am able to sue, I would like to know what kind of attorney to consult.
