Shared Game Drive - Windows + Linux

Advice

Hello, I am quite still new to Linux and tried to do some research for what's the best way to to this, but generally similar posts about this situation are either boiling down to just file transfer and access or have inconclusive answers (for my situation).

I am currently dualbooting Windows and Linux, and have 3 drives in my computer:

  • 256GB NVME SSD that is solely used as a Windows drive + small daily documents traffic.
  • 1TB NVME SSD - used as a game drive in Windows
  • 1TB Sata SSD - used for Linux but mostly empty.

What I want to do is to have a single combined game-drive that I can access from both Windows and Linux. I am mostly playing Steam-based games as well as some that have kernel-level anti-cheat with my friends.

Why I really want this setup is that there are days where I might have some extra work to do in Windows + game with friends and just end up using that OS for the day without switching between systems too often.

I could gather some information about the way to do it but generally felt like stability was pretty low, so I'm looking for a fresh pair of eyes.

What I tried:
- shared BTRFS with winbtrfs + automounting (at that time in Bazzite, but falling short in Cachy)
- using NTFS in Linux, worked okay until drive started to develop dementia(random sectors getting corrupted or unaccusable, crashes, Windows nuking my Linux drive completely).

While I'm spending 80% of the time in Linux, the rest is still used to interact with friends online and gaming as well as Windows-based work.

I see that exFAT was recommended as an option however, opinions on it is pretty split, some say it's good for games and working great for them, others saying using it only for data tranfer.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Thank you!
