Hi folks, here’s my review of adding a second eReader to complement my kindle paperwhite (2023). After seeing my aunts kobo and realizing there are viable alternatives to Amazon, I went down an absolute rabbit hole of options. I was very drawn to the palm size options since I do a lot of scrolling while waiting for my baby to fall asleep and would prefer to read and have a softer screen during that time.

What i researched: I explored the viwoods ai ereader, the Boox Palma models, and the xteink options (mostly the 4 size). I’m aware of bigme but it didn’t fit my budget and I do not want a second smartphone.

What I tried: the boox go 6 gen ii, go 7 in BW, and the Palma 2 pro.

What I’m keeping: the Palma 2 Pro, despite the hefty price tag. I wish I had found it earlier in my postpartum journey- it would’ve been a game changer when you’re up with a tiny baby every 2 hours. The kindle worked, but I often had it set up with a Bluetooth changer, etc versus just holding the Palma. This device is fabulous and I can tell it’s going to up my reading significantly- letting me sneak in a chapter here and there. Also, I was shocked at the screen difference in my own test- I had read about it being impacted by the color display. Honestly, on its own, I have no complaints. It’s easy to read, simple to adjust, and works fine. I don’t really need color but I don’t mind it. I do not read manga or other color-dependent texts and i don’t think id recommend this device if thats your primary goal.

Notes on the others: I LOVED the go 7, but unfortunately between the kindle and the ipad, it’s currently redundant- and not cheap, especially with the stylus ringing in at an extra $50. I did not test the stylus.

The go 6 gen ii was underwhelming compared to the 7 and the palma, probably because it runs the oldest version of android. The size is nice- it’s quite small and much lighter than a kindle- but the experience was clearly less than the other two devices.

Baby is waking up from nap, so there’s my review! I hopes it helps someone making their own decision. This sub was very insightful.

Photos for size comparison, normal screen brightness (10) versus full (can’t imagine when you’d have it turned up all the way). Temperature at 5.
