Do you think there are no disabled people without industrial society?
Title mostly, but there seems to be this common sense idea that anti-civilization anarchist tendencies are ableist. The necessary corollary of this idea is that disabled people depend on industrialism and did not exist until industrial society.
This seems to be lowkey kind of a racist idea, since it’s very close to narratives about how enlightened and progressive are “civilized” (read white, European, modernist) societies. It’s not like all other sorts of societies are this stereotypical spartan/Hobbesian eugenic project. People with other arrangements care for each other too! Often in ways that are shockingly “inefficient” to the so-called “civilized” observer.
It also casts industrial societies as a monolith based on whatever ideal form the proponent imagines. As if there is not a great ongoing struggle to secure even a fraction of freedom for the disabled in those societies. It also ignores all the people disabled in the pursuit of industrialization, and the ways that an industrial society is necessarily supremacist since it depends on standardized solutions to diverse problems.
So help me see what you’re talking about here if you think disability justice and industrialism go hand in hand but you’re also not just worshipping Eurocentric modernist ideas.
