When I was watching this movie as a kid, I thought Elango made a huge mistake and that he was selfish to leave Easwari and disappear from everyone he knew.

Watching this movie as a grown-up made me understand that Elango did the right thing. Not only that, I understand why he did not inform Easwari or get in touch with the entire family at all. If he had tried that, they would have trapped and forced him to live and procreate with Easwari. The only reason why his father realized his mistake was because Elango disappeared entirely out of his life, and he realized the loss of his son and introspected why it happened.

His four friends were so irritating and did not even try to understand his situation. If Elango had kept in touch with his friends, they would have not understood his problems and would have informed his father of his whereabouts. He wouldn't have had a decent, normal life at all.

Contacting Easwari and telling his wishes to separate from her would not have been possible as well, because Easwari was treated as someone who does not know how to make decisions for herself. Nobody in the village, including her mother and uncle (Elango's dad), would have understood her situation or suggested her remarriage. Elango would have been the one to tie the rock to his ankle and drowned in the well.

Five Star - Elango did the right thing by disappearing from his family and friends.
