How do I work around dementia without addressing it?

I’ll keep this simple to avoid confusion. I’m a high school volunteer at my local hospital, working shifts in the Stroke and Palliative wing. My responsibility is pretty much to make sure all the patients have fully stocked rooms and feel comfortable with all their needs met. As expected, there are a few dementia patients in this wing, and the ones on end of life care look like they’ve had it really bad. I have to go in every room that’s safe and spend a good few minutes in there - usually this means I have to interact with the patient too. For most this isn’t a problem, but for patients with dementia I’ve had a lot of trouble with this. Patients have hallucinated severely and been extremely confused while I was in the room, so I pretty much just stopped trying to talk to them and tried to be invisible. Is this really the best way to handle things? I’m worried about having a conversation go wrong with a dementia patient and not knowing how to act. If anyone with experience with this stuff could help me it would really be appreciated, thank you in advance.
