advice+encouragement
My boyfriend recently confessed that he has been struggling with a hidden sexual addiction (watching vids) for years. He brought it into the light on his own and has been completely honest with every question I've asked. He isn't making excuses or blaming me. He says this has nothing to do with me and existed long before our relationship.
Since telling me, he has committed to seeking biblical counseling through our church. I'm also seeking wisdom from older Christian women. We've both been praying and reading Scripture, and he wants to build our relationship on Christ instead of continuing to hide this struggle.
He says he hated living this way, wanted to stop for a long time, and finally realized he couldn't fight it alone. He wants accountability, self control, and genuine repentance.
I understand that recovery is a process because I know what it's like to fight an addiction myself. By God's grace I've experienced freedom, so I believe change is possible, but I also want to be wise.
For those who have been in a similar situation, either as the person struggling or as their significant other:
What helped rebuild trust?
What healthy boundaries did you have?
Do these actions sound like genuine first steps toward change?
How can I support him in a Christ-centered way without trying to become his counselor or accountability partner?
I'm hurting, but I'm also hopeful because he's choosing honesty, accountability, and Christ instead of secrecy. I'd really appreciate hearing from people who have walked this road.
