Does automatically adding b-roll to short onboarding videos actually save time?

I’ve been making a few very short onboarding videos lately, mostly screen recordings with voiceover showing people how to configure a feature or complete a workflow.

I tried having AI generate a first pass of b-roll, but the results were kind of awkward. Any time the voiceover mentioned words like “team,” “approval,” or “workflow,” it would throw in generic shots of offices, meetings, or people shaking hands. Those clips would then cover the exact buttons and steps the viewer was supposed to be watching. So now I usually keep the screen recording visible during any actual product action, and only use b-roll during transitions or when I’m explaining something more abstract. But after reviewing, moving, and deleting the wrong clips over and over, I’m starting to wonder whether auto-generated b-roll is actually any faster than just finding the visuals myself.

How do you handle this for short product tutorials?

When deciding whether to keep a b-roll shot, do you care more about whether it matches the voiceover, or whether it gets in the way of understanding the actual steps?
