Do I (f21) sound entitled because of an interaction with a stranger (m40) because my best friend (f21) says I was?
Hey guys! So recently, I’ve been going to my public park to play tennis and I go with two other friends, Alice (f21) and Brandy (f24). Alice has been playing the same amount of time I have so we’re able to rally back and forth and just have a good time, but Brandy just started playing about a month ago and so, she’s still kind of learning. Today, it was just Brandy and I who went to play and I really wanted to help her get the regular forehand.
There was this older man who had a tennis ball machine and him and a younger boy were just on the same side of the court, hitting the balls that came out of the machine. He clearly knew what he was doing as he was hitting backhanders, slices, and other cool moves that i haven’t been able to do yet.
I ask Brandy if she would feel comfortable if I went to go ask the older man if he could help us/her out as I’m just a beginner and she said she wouldn’t feel comfortable if she went with me but I could ask by myself. So, I walk over to his side- it’s three courts, so one in between us, and I feel awkward because I’m interrupting him, so i get closer and I say, “hey boss, I’m so sorry to bother you but do you think you can guys my friend some pointers?”
The man: “I’m not a professional, if you want pointers take a class.”
Me thinking I’m charming: “I understand sir, but you really look like you know what you’re doing.”
Now, I wanna point out that if he had said no, I would’ve been like, “thank you, im so sorry about interrupting you” and respected that because he doesn’t owe me anything. Also, I wasn’t expecting to use his machine AT ALL. That was his court that he had gotten to first. The machine was of no interest to me, just his advice cause like I said, he was knew what he was doing. I thought he was going to step aside and just tell me to call her over. Anyway,
I honestly don’t remember what he says, but I say, “are you welcome to giving us pointers?”
The man: “yes, but not right now. I’ll go over when IM done.” And I was like, “alright, thank you so much.”
So I go over to Brandy and I tell her and for an hour or so we continue playing and I keep trying to help Brandy and she actually got it SO YAY! Anyway, and I turn over and the man has already picked up his balls and he’s talking with the boy for a good 20 mins and then he leaves. Thats okay, I really wasn’t expecting anything out of him especially because it really seemed like I bothered him and he was kind of rude.
I really didn’t mean to come off entitled- like I said, he doesn’t owe me anything. Would it have been cool if he had said, “oh hey, yes ofc- I have a machine- maybe she can try a ball or two and I can help her.” (Which I thought of this instance much later, once I had dropped off Brandy) But he didn’t and that’s okay.
If someone came up to me and had said, “hey you look like you know what you’re doing, do you think you can give me some pointers?” I would’ve absolutely done so but that doesn’t mean others will. Anyway, after tennis, I told Alice, who wasn’t there, about the situation and she said that it sounded like I was being entitled. Am I being entitled? Do I sound entitled? I am sorry if I do sound entitled cause that’s not my intention. Anyway, thank you for reading!
