[SF] The Dead Man Paradox
Chapter 1**:** White Hair
Everything was steeped in a comforting warmth, leaves dancing beneath a soft light that radiated from all around. It was an enchanting, welcoming forest—its trees whispering with the scent of dew-kissed grass.
Isaac opened his eyes slowly, only to find a faceless figure sitting mere inches away, so close he could feel the quiet stillness of his presence. Isaac fixed his hollow gaze upon him, speaking in a raspy voice that sounded as if it were drawn from ashes**:**
"Did I die?"
The unknown man smiled gently, his voice flowing as smooth as calm water**:**
"No... You still have a long way to go."
In the very next instant, the warm forest shattered like a thin pane of glass, replaced by desperate, frantic screaming...
"Lena... Isaac! Isaac, wake up, brother... Please, wake up!"
The scream pierced his ears like a sound rising from the bottom of a deep well. Isaac forced his eyelids open with immense weight, as though they were carved from stone. His vision was blurred and fractured, like glass smeared with moisture.
He slumped back against the wall, half-sitting and half-reclined, his exhausted frame barely holding itself up. Blood pooled sluggishly from his forehead, while a dull, warm ache seeped through his shoulder, soaking his shirt. Through the doubled haze of his strained eyes, he caught sight of his sister, Lena. She was clinging to him tightly, weeping uncontrollably, her tears falling onto his dirt-stained cheek**:**
"You saved us, brother... They all ran away! But... what happened to your hair?! Why did it turn like this?!"
Not a single muscle twitched on Isaac**’s face. His features locked into a terrifying neutrality—no sign of joy, no sigh of relief, not even a wince of pain. His eyes stared blankly into the empty space behind his sister’s shoulder, as if her words were passing right through him without touching a single thing inside.
A full day later...
Isaac sat motionless on his bed, trapped in complete silence. He sat awkwardly across the width of the mattress, his legs dangling toward the cold floor, while his weakened hands rested flat beside him. White bandages wrapped his forehead and pressed against his wounded shoulder, but his body bore the still demeanor of something fading.
A gentle knock echoed at the door, before it cracked open slightly to reveal his mother’s face.
"My boy... How are you feeling today?"
Marsha walked in carrying a breakfast tray, stepping cautiously as if walking on fragile glass. She placed it on the small table beside the bed. Isaac quietly raised his eyes, meeting his mother's anxious gaze. His eyes locked onto hers for a few heavy seconds... a dense silence stretching between them like a concrete wall. He said nothing, simply dropping his stare back to the floor with the same suffocating numbness.
Marsha let out a heavy sigh and pulled back outside, her face clouded with helpless grief.
Once the door clicked shut, Isaac finally moved. He rose from the bed with heavy, halting steps and stood before the mirror hanging on the wall. He stared intently at his reflection. It wasn't the bandages that caught his eye, but his hair... half of that hair was now drained into a pale, dry white—a sudden graying, like the ash of old fires. He showed no shock, nor did he even touch his hair. He simply turned his back on the mirror with utter coldness.
Isaac walked with slow, measured strides out of his room, crossing the silent hallway toward the front door.
Catching sight of him leaving, his mother called out, her voice squeezed with anxiety:**
"Where are you going, Isaac?"
He paused at the threshold, and without turning around, spoke in a hollow, lifeless tone**:**
"I’m taking a short walk... I'll be back."
He stepped outside, pulling the door shut quietly behind him. Marsha exhaled a deep, heavy breath she had been holding in her chest. She turned to her daughter Lena, who was sitting nearby, and whispered**:**
"Thank God... He spoke at last. I was terrified for him."
Lena rested her shoulder against the table, placing her palm against her cheek as she stared melancholily into space. She replied softly**:**
"I’ve never seen Isaac like this in my entire life, Mom... He used to talk and reassure us after every disaster we faced. But ever since he started planning how to deal with that gang... something inside him broke."
Outside, Isaac walked at a sluggish, unhurried pace, dragging his weight through the edges of town until he crossed into the fringe of the neighboring forest. His senses were nearly numb, yet his eyes drifted slowly between the tree trunks and the swaying shadows of leaves.
After walking for hours, exhaustion finally claimed him. He leaned back against the trunk of an ancient tree, resting his head and upper back against the hard wood while the rest of his body lay stretched over the cool grass. He closed his eyes and surrendered to the quiet; the night before, he had managed barely three broken hours of sleep, ridden with delirium.
The moment he slipped into slumber... he returned to that very same place.
He was walking through that warm, welcoming forest once more, and beside him strolled the same faceless man. The man turned to him, asking in a gentle tone**:**
"How are you feeling today?"
Isaac answered in a weary voice, looking up at the canopy above**:**
"I don’t know..."
The man offered a subtle, reassuring smile... and in that exact instant, Isaac**’**s eyes snapped open, waking to the low moan of the wind rushing through the real trees.
