In this video, Max Fisher explores the systemic reasons why modern dating has become increasingly difficult and stressful for many people, supported by data from articles and research papers.

In the past, traditional heterosexual marriages provided women with financial and social security in exchange for domestic labor and childcare. As women have gained financial independence and reduced social stigma regarding remaining single, this "old bargain" has collapsed. Many women now view the traditional model of marriage as detrimental to their career and leisure time, leading them to opt out of dating when they feel expectations remain lopsided.

A broader shift toward solitary activities like streaming, gaming, and ordering delivery has caused a decline in real-world social interaction. This has atrophied our social skills, making in-person connection more difficult and dating feel more like a tedious, anxiety-inducing chore rather than an organic, joyful experience.

The "Zillow Effect" of dating apps: dating apps overwhelm the brain with near-infinite choices, making us enter a mindset of filtering rather than making connections with individuals. This makes people feel constantly judged, rejected, or replaceable, as they and their potential partners are perpetually looking for a more optimal match.

Max makes a few recommendations in closing:

1. (Mostly directed at straight men) Reject outdated gender expectations so you can cultivate equal partnership. Prioritize an equal split of cooking, cleaning, childcare, and/or emotional labor in your relationship.

2. Make and spend time with friends in person.

3. Date people you know. Data suggests that the most successful and satisfying connections often start from existing connections, which provides a foundation of trust and emotional stakes that apps lack.
