Male, 23 – Many of my shed hairs are much thinner near the root and the root is bent. What could this mean?
Hi everyone,
I'm a 23-year-old male and I'm experiencing something unusual with my hair.
A large number of the hairs I shed are much thinner near the root (proximal end), while the rest of the hair shaft is noticeably thicker. In many of these hairs, the root is also bent or curved.
This isn't just an occasional hair—I find many hairs like this every day.
I'm wondering:
What could cause hair to become much thinner toward the root?
Is this pattern associated with telogen effluvium, alopecia areata, AGA, DUPA, scarring alopecia, or another hair disorder?
Does the bent/curved root have any significance?
Has anyone experienced this before? If so, what was your diagnosis?
What tests (trichoscopy, hair pull test, scalp biopsy, blood tests, etc.) helped identify the cause?
Did any treatment improve this type of hair shedding?
I'd really appreciate any advice or experiences. Thank
