Five changes. All based on MCC's latest recommendations. All coming into effect from August 1 with the Duleep Trophy as the first competition under the new rules.

The most impactful one first. Deliberate front-foot no-balls and dangerous full tosses now result in a match-long suspension for the bowler. Previously the punishment was just for the remainder of that innings. The BCCI explicitly called this a stricter punishment and the message is clear — they have seen enough of bowlers gaming the system with intentional no-balls in pressure situations and they are done with it.

Second big change. In multi-day cricket, the final over of the day must now be completed even if a wicket falls during it. Previously teams could use a late wicket to stop play and protect their incoming batter from facing the remaining balls in difficult conditions. That loophole is now closed. Late evening wickets just became significantly more dangerous for the batting side.

The wicketkeeper rule is the subtlest but most practically significant. Previously keepers had to have their gloves fully behind the stumps from the moment the ball came into play — meaning the start of the bowler's run-up. The DRS era made this increasingly visible and keepers were being penalised for natural weight shifts during the approach that gave them zero competitive advantage. Now they only need to be correctly positioned at the instant the ball is released. It sounds technical but every wicketkeeper in India is quietly very relieved right now.

Two more changes. An extra line on the leg side in white ball cricket to help umpires judge wides more consistently. And updated overthrow definition — it now specifically means a throw made to break stumps, prevent runs or effect a run out, making it clearer what counts.

All five will start with the Duleep Trophy next month. Whether these eventually come into IPL playing conditions is unclear since IPL operates under separate laws.

Ravi Bishnoi by the way — the same Bishnoi who bowled three deliberate no-balls against England and conceded 29 runs in one over — is now in the Zimbabwe squad under the new regime where that would cost him the rest of the match. Timing.

BCCI just introduced five rule changes for domestic cricket and two of them could genuinely affect how the game is played at every level
