In debt to employer, trapped for 2 years
TLDR: first job out of college took my employer up on masters reimbursement program, can’t leave without owning them $50k+ for 2 years. This problem is 100% of my own making.
When I first graduated I got a job that I really enjoyed. 100% remote, the work was interesting, everyone was super nice and liked me. My employer offered a 100% reimbursement if you got a masters in your field while working, the only hook was that you had to stay 2 years after graduation. At the time, I saw this as actually a good thing. I thought getting the company to invest it me as a way to keep them from getting rid of me. So, like an idiot, I found one of the most “prestigious”, aka expensive, program I could find.
Fast forward 3 years, I’ve just finished my masters and the company is completely different. They’ve forced us back into the office, all the work I enjoyed has been outsourced, the cool people left and the ones who are left are either jaded or the most two face cunts I’ve ever met and hours have gone through the roof. I’ve grown to hate the field I work in and would take a pay cut to do something else. Additionally, the job is in a small town and I realize now that spending my 20s here is a waste.
The contract I signed says if I leave I will be forced to reimburse the company for my tuition. I wake up every morning praying they will announce layoffs. I feel like a trapped animal and my resent towards the company grows everyday. I regret drinking the koolaid when I joined.
