early onset glaucoma and initial diagnosis

💊 Meds & Treatment

hi friends, not sure if this is the right place. I read the rules and hope I'm in line.

I have a mixed breed border collie (suspected australian kelpie/border collie mix.) she turned six in april of this year. on a friday morning, she started squinting and I took her into the vet. she had some irritation and no scratches - no urgency. if no improvement, take her in on monday.

took her in on monday, vet is freaking out that we need to see a specialist asap. take her to the specialist - she had uncontrolled glaucoma all weekend. the pressure built up enough to cause her retina to detach. we're now facing a $4k surgery in a few weeks for an enucleation (eyeball removal and autopsy.)

I genuinely want to believe the vet didn't have the tools to test eye pressure, which would have signaled a more urgent issue earlier if the test had been administered.

does anyone know if it's normal for an average general vet practitioner to have these tools? I don't feel like they did anything wrong, however I have a deep gut feeling to not take her back there, even though I have no proof.
