Red Sox Catcher Market: Who Should They Target?

Catcher seems to me to be the most logical place Boston can make a big swing. Their current options are mediocre at best, while the upgrade options are significant.

SS has maybe Neto and Pena. 2B has Torres and CJ Abrams (lefty), but then looking forward we worry about having Mayer and Arias blocked.

Catcher is a huge hole and also has the best options reasonably available in trade.

1 Shea Langeliers, Oakland Athletics: The Best Realistic Fit

2026: .260/.330/.496 23 HR, .826 OPS | K% 19.7 | BB% 7.4

Statcast: Barrel% 14.6, Avg EV 91.6 mph, Hard Hit% 44.1

This is the name I keep coming back to. Oakland is tanking hard (lost 15 of 17 at one point this summer) and reportedly "open to anything" after a failed contract extension with Langeliers. Dude put up a .861 OPS with 31 HR last year and is on track to match it while improving his BB rate. He does have some significant split issues where he destroys lefties and isn't great vs. righties, but still way better than internal options.

Defensively, he's a mixed bag. Not great, in fact probably awful. Statcast says he's the worst in the league. But the arm and athleticism are above average. Better overall than anything we're currently running out there.

Control: Through 2029

2. Hunter Goodman, Colorado Rockies: The Power Bat With a Catch

2026 .257/.326/.565 with 31 homers | K% 32.7 | BB% 7.5

Statcast: Barrel% 14.6, Avg EV 91 mph, Hard Hit% 46.6, xwOBA .310

The raw power is genuinely special. He's on pace for 50+ HR and has one of the higher hard-hit rates among catchers. The problem is obvious: a 32.7% strikeout rate is brutal, and that xwOBA of .310 tells you the BABIP-juiced Coors numbers aren't fully real. The slugging will crater moving out of Denver. He's got an .815 OPS away from Coors and a .970 OPS at home. But also doesn't have r/L split issues.

Defensively, he's not Narvaez, but not far off.

Control: Control through 2030

3. Francisco Alvarez, New York Mets: The Pipe Dream

2026 .257/.326/.440 | K% 23.2 | BB% 8.0
Statcast: Barrel% 16, Avg EV 90 mph, Hard Hit% 44 (was 54 last year), xwOBA .336

Word came out the Mets were sellers of anyone besides a few people and Alvarez's name was suspicously absent. The ask is going to be astronomical given his age and pedigree. "Blockbuster-like haul," per reporting. His 2026 numbers don't justify it, nor does really any of his career. But he's only 24 and hit 25 homers as a 21 year old. The 2025 improvements (.787 OPS, better K%) haven't fully carried over. He's shown flashes of elite potential (the ceiling is real) but he's also still streaky with a swing that creates too many whiffs against high velo. The Mets have Luis Torrens who is great defensively and is also young and should be playing more.

Defense: bad but improving

Control: Control through 2029

4. Ryan Jeffers, Minnesota Twins: The Rental Dilemma

2026. 287/.398/.552 9 homers (only 44 games) | K% 15.5 | BB% 15.5
Statcast: Bat speed 73.3 mph (top 10%)

The best pure offensive profile in this group right now. Those K%/BB% numbers are insane: 15/15 is rare. The issue is two-fold: (1) he's a rental, hitting FA after this season, and (2) the defense lags well behind He's in the 15th percentile for caught stealing, 34th percentile pop time, 62nd percentile framing. He's actually worse behind the plate than Narvaez, who at least frames well.

Defense: Bad

Control: FA after this year.

There are 4 legitimate options on the trade market to upgrade that fit Boston's need for righty power. I say if they don't get one of these (or equivalent I'm not thinking about), I would argue they aren't serious about competing. Huge hole for the team. Lots of options on the market. Don't do a "Danny Jensen" move and pick up Tyler Stephenson and claim full throttle
