UPSC Current Affairs - 23 July 2026 | Key issues for Prelims and Mains

Quick condensation from today's Prep Desk brief.

  1. Supreme Court sanctioned strength Bill

The Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026 seeks to raise other judges from 33 to 37 (excluding the CJI), replacing an ordinance. Trap: 37 other judges means 38 including the CJI. Parliament sets the number by ordinary law under Article 124(1); it does not appoint individual judges.

  1. Electronics Manufacturing Clusters in Tamil Nadu

Clusters at Manallur and Pillapaikkam were approved for common infrastructure and supplier ecosystems. An EMC is not automatically a semiconductor fab; cluster approval is not the same as every unit being operational.

  1. Mission Mausam

Launched in January 2025 to make India weather-ready and climate-smart through denser observations, modelling and services. IMD already draws data from 50 Doppler Weather Radars. Doppler measures motion via frequency shift; it does not directly measure every atmospheric variable.

  1. UPI scale and overseas footprint

NPCI data put onboarded UPI users at about 55.49 crore by June 2026, with use or adoption across 12 countries. UPI is the rail under RBI regulation; apps are interfaces. Overseas QR acceptance is not another country replacing its domestic system with UPI.

  1. National Sickle Cell Mission screening

Screening covers ages 0-40 in affected tribal areas, aiming for elimination as a public-health problem by 2047. Disease and carrier counts are distinct. Sickle cell disease is inherited, not contagious or caused by iron deficiency.

  1. Cotton ABS funds to states

NBA released Rs 6.67 crore in access and benefit-sharing funds to 11 cotton-growing states after commercial research on G. hirsutum varieties. When individual conservers cannot be traced, geographic allocation can still fund conservation. NBA is statutory under the Biological Diversity Act, 2002.

  1. Indigenous Small Modular Reactors

The Nuclear Energy Mission targets 100 GW by 2047 and at least five indigenous SMRs by 2033. Watch MWe (electrical) versus MWth (thermal). Modular does not remove safety, siting, fuel or waste requirements.

Discussion: For Prelims, which number trap is easier to miss - SC strength including/excluding the CJI, or MWe versus MWth for SMRs?
