you don't have trust issues. you have accurate memory.
people say trust issues like it's a malfunction. like your reluctance to hand someone access to the parts of you that got damaged last time is a bug in your wiring that needs to be corrected before you can function properly in relationships again.
but think about where the reluctance actually came from.
it didn't appear randomly. it showed up after something specific. after someone you trusted with real information used it in a way that cost you. after you were open in a particular way and what came back wasn't what you needed and the gap between those two things left a mark. after you watched yourself be more available to someone than they were capable of being to you, not once but enough times that your nervous system quietly updated its model of what happens when you go first.
that's not a malfunction. that's your brain doing exactly what brains are supposed to do. learning from evidence. adjusting behavior based on what the data actually showed you instead of what you hoped it would show.
the problem isn't that you have a bad memory. the problem is that the people who benefited from your trust before the update want access to the version of you that existed before you had the information you have now. and when you don't provide that version they call it an issue, your issue, the thing you need to work through, as if your caution is the variable that needs adjusting rather than the pattern of behavior that produced the caution in the first place.
being slow to trust again after something broke your trust isn't damage that needs fixing. it's information about what you now know you need before you extend that access to someone again. proof over time. consistency between what someone says and what they actually do. behavior in the moments that don't benefit them as much as the moments that do.
that's not a high bar dressed up as emotional damage.
that's just knowing what you need now that you know what it costs when you don't get it.
