Chinese 2 Shoe Rotation

Gear

After spending decent mileage in both, it’s obvious these aren’t competitors—they complement each other to make maybe the perfect two-shoe stable on a budget

Li-Ning Red Hare 9 Ultra – The Recovery Workhorse
The Red Hare 9 Ultra has become my go-to recovery AND every-day shoe. The three-layer BOOM midsole gives it a soft, forgiving ride that takes the sting out of the road. It feels like you’re not pushing while still being surprisingly lively.
What impressed me most is that it’s not just a slow plodder. Despite being a recovery shoe, it’s perfectly happy cruising anywhere from 6:00/km down to around 4:00/km. The foam remains responsive, transitions are smooth, and the grip is among the best I’ve used. It’s a shoe that encourages you to keep the effort easy, but it won’t hold you back if the pace naturally increases, and despite what people say, it’s still stable. I’ve taken this shoe off-road, and my ankles survived.

Li-Ning Feidian 5 Challenger – A Different League
Then you lace up the Challenger 5…
The first few strides tell you this is lively. The dual-layer midsole and carbon plate deliver an explosive toe-off that makes the Red Hare feel tame by comparison. The shoe feels incredibly light, responsive, and eager to run fast, with a huge sweet spot from tempo efforts all the way to race pace. If you let the shoe dictate the pace and you don’t look at any tracker, I’m sure you’ll be 10-15seconds per KM faster than you intended but feel none the worse for it.
Every time you increase the pace, the Challenger gives something back. It wants you to push. The rocker is ideally placed for confident mid-foot strikers

Verdict

There is a reason every social media platform is raving about the Red Hare 9 Ultra it is fabulous, forgiving and fast. It is excellent at what it’s designed to do.
But the Feidian 5 Challenger is simply on another level. Li-Ning are about to release their 7th iteration, and I think they will be hard pushed to improve on the 5C other than making it lighter and slightly roomier in the toe box
If the Red Hare makes running comfortable, the Challenger makes running exciting for race days up to 10km.
AliExpress and TaoBao make these very affordable, getting you two top shoes for under £180 $240 €210.

Can you make a better two-shoe rotation?
