[DISCUSS] Buying store credit from another player — what happens if it turns out to be stolen?

discussion

I've been looking around but couldn't find much on this, so maybe I'm missing something.

Has anyone here run into issues with buying store credit from another player, only to have it (or the items bought with it) removed later?

Specifically: if I buy, say, $1,000 worth of store credit from someone, and it later turns out that credit came from a hacked/compromised account — what happens to me as the buyer? Can RSI claw back store credit or ships I legitimately paid for, just because the credit's origin was fraudulent?

Is there any protection for a buyer here, or am I just completely exposed if the original account owner reports the hack and gets it reversed? Or does CIG even bother enforcing this? Maybe they just don't care in practice.

Also — what stops a seller from gifting me store credit/ships, waiting a bit, then claiming their account was "hacked" to get everything reversed and reclaimed, so they can turn around and sell it again to someone else? Is there anything preventing that kind of scam?

Has anyone actually experienced this firsthand — either as a buyer who lost credit/ships, or knows someone who has? Curious how RSI/CIG handled it in practice.
