Potentially unpopular Hot Take: Looking aside from storyline and David's sacrifice, Lucy would be better off ending her life than living through grief.
I'm not sold on this take as it's a dilemma of mine, but I just wanted to see what anyone else thought. I've been half depressed ever since watching the show (even picked up Cyberpunk 2077 although I haven't had too much time to play-- always loved the genre so the show was a good catalyst tbh) and looking at all the reasons for it, the biggest is how much grief Lucy must feel.
Going to the moon to fulfill David's sacrifice was a great ending for this show (clearly, as the tragedy of Cyberpunk Edgerunners is burned into anyone who watches) But realistically, what is next? She opened herself up for the first time since escaping Arasaka for the man of her dreams, just to lose him less than a year later in the most heartbreaking, bitter (not bittersweet) ending with no one left around her. We all know about the tragedy of miscommunication in so many ways within Edgerunners, such as David fulfilling her old dream of going to the moon, forgetting her new dream: his living.
It just made me feel unimaginable loneliness for Lucy. And I feel that for her, no amount of time passing to get over it is worth continuing to live. I know many people will disagree with this, the prevailing argument being that ending her own life would be an insult to David's sacrifice. But I can't see how continuing to live is actually living at all-- especially living in such unimaginable pain in a place like Night City.
In the present, if you or I lost our partner or best friend or parents, many of us would still have someone and a stable life (relative to the world of Cyberpunk at least). Lucy has nothing-- she must live alone in a cruel world.
