How much prompting should a folder of reports need?

Last week I had seven project update PDFs from different teams. I needed the recurring blockers, any conflicting numbers, and a short action list for our weekly review.

I uploaded the files to an AI chat and started typing a detailed prompt with the output format, source filenames, and how to handle anything unclear. Halfway through, I noticed the Owlfy voice shortcut I had just set up.

The request was already pretty clear in my head, so I stopped typing, selected the same reports, and said, “Read these, find the common issues, and put the next steps into a table.” I ended up with one combined summary and an action list. I still checked the important points against the original files, but I skipped most of the uploading and prompt setup.

It made me wonder how much prompt engineering routine document work really needs.

How detailed are your prompts for tasks like this?
