Mobile Puncture Repairers

The purpose of my sharing this is for information purposes only, such that others do not make the mistake I made in unknowingly allowing a mobile puncture repairer to provide an incomplete overcharged service and potentially endanger safety. I have also escalated with the company and will take further if I dont feel that they adequately demonstrate adopting proper procedures by their repairers from now on.

  • I had a puncture. I called a recommended local reputed mobile puncture repairer. They looked on the outside, found, used a rubber plug to repair puncture and charged me £60.
  • The tyre was still losing pressure. Called the mobile repairer again, he visited. examined on the outside, nothing found, just reinforced the previous repair and he said that the tyre is fine.
  • Tyre was still losing pressure. So I now went to a recommended proper tyre shop.
  • He separated the tyre from the wheel. Found the rubber plug repair was okay, tyre valve was faulty, but most importantly there was another 1 inch nail puncture which could only be seen from inside the tyre.
  • I was just about to undertake a 200 mile journey. The Mobile repairer was in a hurry to repair and make money. Had I continued to persevere with what had been done, I would have been exposed to a severe safety risk.
  • In the shop the gentleman attended to both the previous and 2nd new found puncture from the inside of the tyre using a combination repair patch and plug; he replaced the tyre valve; and finally completed with the wheel balancing.
  • His total charge was £27.
  • He also advised me for the future that for a puncture repair in futurer, I must ensure that a repairer should:
    1. Demount and remove the tyre from the wheel.
    2. Visually inspect the outside and inside of the casing for hidden bruising or damage.
    3. Fill the hole with a vulcanised, mushroom-style plug-patch from the inside.
