To you, my dark horse in the “city of stars”
There was a moment small enough to disappear into the noise of an ordinary day that quietly dismantled everything I believed about the world.
Until then, fate was just a beautiful story people told themselves. Past lives belonged to novels. The universe was nothing more than stars, distances, and cold mathematics.
Then I saw you.
I was standing in a train station with nothing occupying my mind except the excitement of a weekend away and the train that would arrive in a few minutes. Life was wonderfully ordinary.
And then my eyes found you.
I still don’t know how to explain what happened in that single heartbeat.
Perhaps to everyone else you were simply a handsome stranger. Perhaps just another face that would dissolve into the crowd. But to me… you were something my soul recognized long before my mind could understand. It wasn’t attraction as I had known it before. It was gravity. It was hunger. It was home disguised as a stranger.
I looked at my friend and whispered, almost laughing at the impossibility of it,
“I wish I could sit next to him.”
A childish wish.
The kind the universe usually ignores.
When the train arrived, we instinctively followed you into the first carriage, only to lose sight of you while searching for our assigned seats. A steward led us through carriage after carriage until your face had already dissolved from my thoughts.
Then he stopped.
“These are your seats.”
I looked up.
And there you were.
Sitting beside mine.
To this day I cannot explain the feeling that flooded through me. It wasn’t surprise.
It was recognition.
As though I had arrived impossibly late to a meeting we had arranged centuries ago.
I stared at you shamelessly.
Your hair.
The quiet curve of your eyebrows.
The stillness in your eyes as you stubbornly kept them fixed ahead, pretending not to notice the stranger only inches away, studying every line of your face as though trying to remember someone she had once loved and somehow forgotten.
I have never been that person.
Never that fearless.
Never that consumed.
We were barely twenty centimeters apart, and I felt as though every breath I took belonged to the same air that surrounded you. I must have seemed almost predatory, unable to look away, unable to explain why every instinct insisted that if I blinked, I would lose you all over again.
And then came the absurdity that transformed coincidence into something almost sacred.
You weren’t even supposed to be there.
Wrong train.
Wrong seat.
Wrong place.
Or perhaps…
Exactly the right one.
Tell me, what game were the gods playing that day?
What impossible sequence of invisible hands moved us across cities, platforms, and numbered seats until two strangers found themselves breathing the same air?
Why you?
Why did I look at you as though I had spent lifetimes searching for your face?
Why did it feel less like meeting someone new and more like finding someone I had been mourning without ever knowing their name?
Who are you?
What strange power do you carry that my thoughts fall silent whenever you are near?
What ancient memory sleeps inside your eyes that awakens something forgotten inside mine?
Around you, every certainty abandons me.
Every wall I have ever built crumbles without resistance.
Every cell in my body bursts into existence like a newborn universe, expanding faster than reason can follow, as though the Big Bang had chosen to happen again beneath my skin.
And if simply looking at you can undo me like this…
I hardly dare confess what happens when you touch me.
Because some things cannot be explained.
They can only be remembered.
