Ongoing iron deficient anemia
Male/37/193cm/100kg
I am currently suffering from iron deficient anemia which has been ongoing for at minimum 3 years, and likely much longer as I have often felt the symptoms prior to the blood tests. This has been an expensive journey for me involving an endoscopy, colonoscopy, double-balloon colonoscopy for the small intestine, MRI, 2 iron infusions, pillcam, as well as numerous blood tests to eliminate parasite, Crohns, Celiac etc as the reason behind it.
I went from having the iron in my blood be essentially untraceable, and my hemoglobin at 83L in 2024, to 32L ferratin and 141L hemoglobin at my best. I believe that my hemoglobin likely improved due to the 2 infusions but my ferratin has remained low. My last blood test in June showed my ferratin had again dropped to 26L, although my hemoglobin has remained in the 140 range.
I had been taking oral iron supplements daily in the form of Ferrous Sulfate 325mg since 2024 which I thought was working, but as my levels were dropping again my doc has now suggested I try taking it every second day. I've also swapped to Iron Polymaltose and Iron Bisglycinate every second day to see if that improves it but it hasn't.
Current medications are:
- Ritalin for ADHD
- Lamotrigine
Iron deficiency symptoms predate me starting these medications, and I don't drink or smoke.
I'm happy to share the detailed blood test reports excluding personal info if you think you may be able to help. Everyone else seems to be stumped on what the issue is and I'm really tired (quite literally) that nobody I've spoken to can find the solution.
