I logged every hour for a month. Making content was about 20% of the work. The rest is the part nobody posts about.
Did a boring experiment to tracked where my time actually went for 30 days as a creator trying to treat this as a business, not a hobby.
Filming and editing came out to roughly a fifth of the total. The rest was answering the same DMs over and over, chasing invoices, repurposing one idea into five formats, fixing my own disorganized files, and deciding what to even make next.
The takeaway that stuck: I’d been calling myself a content creator while 80% of the job was running a small media business, badly. Once I saw the breakdown I started protecting the creative 20% and systemizing the rest.
Curious if this matches others’ reality. If you tracked your week honestly, what’s eating the time that isn’t the actual content?
