Unexpectedly pregnant and high VOC in my flat
I am renting a studio and I've lived here for the past 6 months. Ever since I moved I've noticed a strange chemical-like smell in the flat. It's not sewage or rotten eggs or bleach, it's something new entirely that I cannot recognise. It's punchy and unpleasant but I only notice it when I come home - since I am on the ground floor, I can't keep the windows open when I am away but when I am in I keep them open all the time and the smell clears. Since finding out I am pregnant (8 weeks currently) I bought an at home air quality monitoring device (Airthings). On the day to day it measures an average of 59 ppb for VOC, but the average for last week was 451 ppb because one day there was a massive spike - it got to 2497 ppb (app shows it in the red). This week I had two lower peaks of 445 and 362 for a few hours. The app doesn't say what type of VOC it is and I am trying to get my landlord to pay for a professional reading.
I don't know what the source of the smell is or whether is even in my flat so i can't eliminate it. No matter how much I run the carbon filter air purifier or how much i air out the flat, when the flat is sealed the smell comes back so i guess the source is always present.
I am still contemplating whether I should keep the baby - have only been with my partner a few months (were using BC), and he said he'd support me regardless but his preference is towards ending. This VOC situation is a factor too because if it will impact the future child cognitively or developmentally it wouldn't be fair.
I made this post to get your thoughts on what this could mean and what the potential impact might be.
